Share was the first in an ongoing series of temporary commissions from Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea as part of the Portobello Road Arts Project, which aims to help regenerate the Golborne Road area. Located along the North Wall of Portobello Road, a stretch of blank wall between Golborne Road and Oxford Gardens linking North Kensington’s Portobello Road and Golborne Road markets, the intention is to create a visual link between the two markets and thereby encourage visitors to continue further up Portobello Road. For this flyposter commission, artist Hew Locke painted on enlarged versions of defunct share certificates, with each piece reflecting the history or subject matter of the company in some way. The works are a general reference to the current difficult economic climate, although some specifically respond to the context of the locality. For example, the area has a large Moroccan community and some of the share certificates relate to this. The project is funded by Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and managed by the Arts Service team.
