Local authority policy can encourage art projects for the public realm. A range of projects have been realised over the last ten years as part of planning requirements between local authorities and developers. Projects are also realised through the interest of artists, curators, arts organisations and others through integrating opportunities into existing borough strategies and approaches, such as those relating to culture, health and well-being, community engagement, public realm improvements and the use of civic buildings.

Involvement in projects relating to building works often means aligning with complicated procurement processes. Identifying funding early on in all projects is crucial and a core budget needs to be secured before going out to seek additional funding. Other sections of this website focus on the process of commissioning, the individual steps involved and identifying the expertise needed.
